Racing Commission Reinstates Vale Kennels Greyhounds

Testimony begins in murder trial of Phoenix man

The trial of Steve Lee Lewis 19 opened with jurors chosen after he pleaded innocent by reason of insanity. Lewis faces two counts for the July 8 shooting of William Ramsey Tait 22 Metrick NY and John Chris Gast 24 Phoenix as another man, David K Anderson 21 Syosset NY, escaped injury while a fourth, Derrell Lynn Doyal 19, pleaded guilty to a murder charge in a narcotics double cross case linking a $9000 plan to buy marijuana.

Turkish guerrillas free 6 airmen held near Ankara

Six American airmen seized near an Ankara radar station were released after five days in captivity by Turkish Liberation Army guerrillas. The captors demanded 400000 dollars, but the Turkish government said no ransom was paid and the airmen were treated well during the confinement.

Scottsdale couple free on bond after lumber theft arrest

William L. Smith, 34, and his wife Deanna, 30, both of 8528 E. Catalina, were released on $1 bonds after Sunday arrests on petty theft charges. Police say they took four sheets of plywood and 19 pieces of lumber from a construction site near Mesa and Southern Drives and are to appear in Mesa City Court.

Bombing Triggers Massive Secondary Explosions Near Sepone

UPI reports U S air strikes on the Ho Chi Minh Trail junction near Sepone caused a massive wave of secondary explosions. Spokesmen say 1 600 additional blasts from Monday to Tuesday and 500 from Sunday in the same area, with 2 100 recorded in two days. Separate battles in Laos and near Lao Bao yield hundreds of enemy casualties and logistic disruptions. A delayed U S Command note says two F 4 Phantom bombers dropped Kapal amid advancing South Vietnamese troops, killing eight and wounding 64.

Magma agma Copper Co. gains a conditional state air permit to continue operating its San Manuel smelter. The board requires installation of a Special flash furnace by 1974 at an estimated cost of 50 million dollars to cut emissions below state standards. Mesa Paving Co. withdraws an asphalt plant proposal at San Manuel for nonconforming plans.

Vandals Damage Mohave School Over Weekend

Mohave School at 5520 N 86th St suffers extensive vandalism over the weekend. Ken Kellogg head custodian reports broken windows in classrooms and principal’s office, torn speakers and cages, roof damage, cement poured into a drinking fountain, and water turned on. Estimates for repairs pending.
