Icy flood waters spread death and destruction across the East as a Norfolk-style dam breach in Norwich Conn caused at least six deaths, extensive damage, and mass evacuations. Ohio and Pennsylvania faced rising rivers, power outages, and emergency curfews as crews rescued residents and prepared for further crests.
An earthen dam burst late Wednesday night in Norwich Connecticut flooding four square miles of the city with waters up to 12 feet deep. At least six people were killed and many more were injured as the torrent swept through the area trapping women inside a mill. rescue operations continued through the night as authorities assessed the damage and searched for survivors.
Police logged six traffic accidents yesterday causing minor injuries and more than $2,000 in damage. One driver, Samuel Dillingham, 45, was cited after rear ending Rolla Thomas’s car on 17th Avenue and fleeing, later captured. The incident injured Mrs. Thomas who was hospitalized. others involved escaped with minor or no injuries.
