Navajos vote Paul Jones out after eight years
Navajo voters chose Raymond Nakai as tribal chairman after two days of balloting on the vast reservation. Incumbent Paul Jones received 8,790 votes, with Samuel W. Billison at 6,554 and Nakai leading with 10,501. Jones, 67, sought a third four year term. Nakai formerly worked at the Navajo Ordnance Depot and hosted a Navajo language radio program. The election also elected 74 tribal council members.

A federal Bureau of Public Roads grant will finance a two year survey of road needs in Scottsdale Mesa and Tempe. C Roger Brady of the highway department will head the study with federal share 112500 and each community and Maricopa county contributing 7500.
