Johnson urges new cabinet department of transportation
President Johnson asks Congress to create a cabinet level department consolidating transit and safety agencies. He proposes a national safety transportation board, a $700 million six year highway safety program, and testing of 2000 mph supersonic aircraft with prototype funding of $200 million for 1969. The plan would unify agencies including the Bureau of Public Roads, FAA, Coast Guard, Civil Aeronautics Board, and others under a single secretary.
