Advocates of strong gun control conceded a session ending filibuster could bury efforts to ban mail order sales of rifles and shotguns. The Senate Judiciary Committee voted 7 to 5 to postpone gun legislation to July 9, three weeks before adjournment, with key supporters absent or delayed.

Democratic contenders clash in North Dakota convention fight
Hubert Humphrey and Eugene McCarthy led a tense battle at the North Dakota state convention over 25 national Democratic convention votes. Four delegates were automatically designated for Humphrey under party rules, with McCarthy aiming to win a share through undecided delegates and possible floor action. Nixon meanwhile urged moving government closer to the people on a national radio broadcast and earned endorsement from Gov. Volpe. Rockefeller assailed Nixon for avoiding major issues in a Sioux Falls press conference. McCarthy also tangled with NAACP chief Roy Wilkins over his Atlantic City visit, but McCarthy downplayed the rift, saying differences were not very serious.
