Arcadia will unveil the first night lighted baseball field in Scottsdale with a 7:45 ceremony. An exhibition game between Pop's Yanks and Magna Plate will cap the event. athletic director His Brady will throw the switch.
Valley Community Hospital board asks county supervisors to ignore a petition for forming a hospital tax district. The request was announced at an informal meeting and will be formally concurred at the next regular meeting. The move follows the Hospital Advisory Survey and Construction Council reversal in May and a June 1962 approval to build a 150 bed general hospital funded by a tax district.
Four ships, including three Russians, moved through the Thresher search area during the past five days despite a Navy warning to stay out of a 25 mile radius around the disappearance point. The Trieste conducted its third dive toward the ocean bottom as the missing submarine Thresher, with 129 aboard, remains unlocated. Two vessels, one Russian and an unidentified ship, entered the prohibited zone early today, with two more Russian ships entering Sunday and Monday.
Barry Goldwater addresses the national Young Republican convention in San Francisco with delegates showing overwhelming backing for his 1964 presidential bid. The Arizona delegation leads the Goldwater surge with abundant campaign buttons balloons and signs while other candidates receive little visible backing.
An unidentified small man in a tuxedo and white hair tried to kiss Princess Margaret at the Sadler's Wells Ballet Theater. A theater official shoved him aside as he grabbed her arm, then he slipped into the crowd and walked away. The incident occurred moments before Princess Margaret and Lord Snowdon arrived for a charity performance.
Petition drive launches as volunteers from the We're For Scottsdale annexation committee court petitions at 3223 N Hayden Rd. Ray Parrish says a second meeting will be held early next week. The six square mile section, about half the city’s population, seeks re annexation after a December 1961 ruling. A 160 acre parcel was added by the city council to block further moves. The effort focuses on Hohokam school area which holds about a third of the value. The headquarters operate 8 am to 10 pm daily. A judge has allowed a new trial motion and set no date.
Washington reports the cost of living remained steady for two months with the May consumer price index at 106.2, unchanged from the prior two months. Labor statistician Robert J. Myers projects a slight rise in June and notes food costs stay high relative to the 1957-59 base.
Pope Paul VI set the second session of the Ecumenical Council for September 29 and ordered the preparatory body to resume next week. Cardinal Cicognani announced the new date, delaying from September 8 due to Pope John XXIII’s illness and death. The council's coordination commission meets to complete work per December 6 1962 instructions. Pope Paul will meet President Kennedy in a private audience next Tuesday.
The White House announced President Kennedy will land in Rome on Monday instead of Sunday to avoid conflicting with Pope Paul VI’s coronation. He will rest briefly at Lake Como before meetings with Italian leaders and an audience with the Pope.
President Kennedy left state duties to tour southeastern Ireland by helicopter and car visiting Dublin New Ross Deaganstown and Wexford. He met Irish Premier Sean Lemass and attended a garden party and state dinner while kissing cousins and praising the welcome from thousands of Irish people.
Labor Secretary W. Willard Wirtz asked Congress for new powers to curb discrimination by employers and unions. He cited job shortages and racial bias as key factors in Negro unemployment and promoted two provisions of a civil rights plan aimed at hiring and promotion practices. He noted progress by the President's Equal Employment Opportunity Committee and pledges from contractors and unions, including 118 unions, to reduce bias. He highlighted efforts to place more Negroes in federal construction craftsman roles.
HEW assistant secretary James M. Quigley told Congress the administration backs the goals of bills by Rep. Thomas Gill and 52 others to cut off funds to institutions practicing racial discrimination. The administration supports Kennedy's discretionary authority to end aid, which would apply to all federally assisted programs, not only education.
Mayor William Schrader told the Citizens Advisory Committee Scottsdale needs a profes sional city planner to head a proposed Planning Department. The committee urged funds for consulting services to develop a comprehensive city plan, noting two thirds of consultant costs may be reimbursed by the Federal government. The panel prioritized traffic and parking, civic center needs, recreation, zoning in annexed areas, and downtown maintenance and aims to work with the planning department and seek public input.
President Kennedy halted en route from Redmond Square to a field near Wexford to greet the Loretto Convent community. Mother Superior Clement, Kennedy’s third cousin, said he shook hands with the nuns and signed autographs as about 27 sisters greeted him at the gates.
