Scottsdale School District approves corporal punishment policy allowing teachers to spank students only in the presence of another adult and with a valid reason. The board says the policy will stay in place for the next year.
The Scottsdale School Board met in executive session to review an $11.7 million proposed budget for the coming year, with discussions over itemized spending and policy on spanking. The board approved a service contract for inter communications systems and debated portable classrooms funded from a 1961 bond, with action expected Tuesday.
A brief weather note reports fair conditions today and tonight with a high near 106 and a low around 65 tomorrow morning. The previous day reached 100 with a morning low near 66.
Prescott hospital reports Sherri Finkbine 30, a Phoenix television personality, treated for a minor throat particle lodged while eating. She was admitted briefly from a gathering where she interviewed principals for a local art film and released after treatment.
Scottsdale's second annual Dollar Days sale runs three days from tomorrow through Saturday with most merchants offering deep discounts on a wide range of goods. Mesa man Leonard Auchtung escaped a full drunk driving sentence after asserting paint fumes caused his condition when deputies arrested him on April 13. He received a suspended sentence for the charge and a $25 fine for speeding. Auchtung, 40 Eighth Street, Mesa, testified he had been painting all day and was groggy from fumes. His minister Nolan Sluder accompanied him at the hearing.
The Paradise Valley town council, urged by residents and supported by county supervisors, reduced the speed limit on Lincoln Drive from 50 to 40 mph within town limits from Tatum Boulevard to west of Scottsdale Road. The 40 mph zone applies only inside Paradise Valley. outside, including unincorporated areas and Phoenix, the limit remains 50 mph. The change reflects local concerns and a county survey showing only about 13 percent of drivers exceeded 50 mph.
Atty. General Robert F. Kennedy told the House Judiciary Committee he could accept modifications to the civil rights public accommodations section if Congress insists, but he opposes exempting small establishments. He said the aim is to prevent race-based denial of access to public facilities. Chairman Emanuel Celler suggested a revenue-based cutoff, and Kennedy noted merit in the idea while cautioning about delays in defining substantial interstate travel and cross-state shipping in court rulings.
A Belgian army C119 transport plane exploded in flight and crashed into a hillside near Augustdorf Germany during a NATO exercise. Police say 38 of 47 aboard were killed, seven survived unhurt, two injured. Paratroopers and crewmen were among the dead. Defense Minister Seghers visited the site. Eyewitnesses described a roar and a tongue of flame before the crash in the Senne training area.
Kentucky Governor Bert Combs issues an executive order directing all state agencies to take necessary legal action to prevent racial discrimination. Agencies such as the Health Department and the Alcoholic Beverage Control Board would revoke licenses of discriminatory businesses. The move substitutes for a pending anti discrimination bill after talks with lawmakers.
A meeting at 8 o clock tonight will launch a major drive to reannex the six square mile east side area. Hosted by the We're For Scottsdale annexation committee at 3223 N Hayden Road, the session will detail petition circulation procedures led by annexation leaders.
A 22 year old Scottsdale man, Paul Raymond LaCross, was acquitted by a Superior Court jury of armed robbery of the 7 11 Market on December 8 1961. He admitted the act but testified remorse and surrender after returning the $120. LaCross, who was jobless, claimed he pretended a gun to obtain the money. The defense argued the defendant’s aim was to deprive the market of funds only temporarily. Judge Henry Stevens had been reversed earlier by the Arizona Supreme Court for dismissing the count.
