U S and South Vietnamese forces overran a Mekong Delta Viet Cong prison camp freeing 25 captives. Four prisoners were executed as guards fled. eight rescued men were shot and wounded by the escaping guerrillas. Two captors were killed and one captured in the battle near the Bassac River mouth.
Scottsdale police report two homes were entered between June 1 and Tuesday. In Andrew Stone’s residence at 6529 E Lafayette entry was gained via a master bedroom window after a liquor drinker left with towels and appliances. Don Raskin’s home at 4522 NT Gath St saw $70 in dishes and food stolen. Edward Ferris at 2802 N 70th St lost $363 in furniture and a pistol. Violet Adams at 4731 E Sheridan reported $30 cash taken between 11 45 p m and 7 a m.
Prime Minister Trang Van Huong insists Saigon will not join peace talks for at least a year or two, stressing North Vietnam must be a main party. He praises political and economic gains, notes improved public confidence, and says Saigon has a unified military command for the Saigon area.
Prime Minister Pierre Elliott Trudeau won a Liberal majority after dissolving Parliament and seeking a mandate. With 155 of 264 seats, the Liberals end a minority rule since 1962 and pledge reforms in Parliament, laws, and foreign policy. Robert Stanfield offered gracious defeat.
