Five U.S. helicopters downed near Saigon in 24 hours

UPI reports five American combat helicopters lost within 24 hours in the Saigon area killing 36, including a freak three way collision that killed 12 crewmen, Thai soldiers, and a Vietnamese trooper. Another Huey was shot down as Viet Cong gunfire intensified near Saigon.

Trudeau leads as Canada votes in 1968 election riot aftermath

Voters across Canada but including Newfoundland to British Columbia chose a new Commons majority. Rioters in Montreal attacked police during St Jean Baptiste Day celebrations while Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau stood on a dais. Injuries numbered over 120 with more than 200 jailed. Trudeau faced Robert Stanfield and T. C. Douglas as campaigns centered on 264 seats.

Rockefeller Campaign in Vermont Seeks Delegates for Nixon Clash

New York Gov. Nelson Rockefeller campaigned in Vermont to win delegates pledged to Richard Nixon. Nixon led in UPI delegate tallies, with 605 of 667 votes needed. Rockefeller held 260 and Ronald Reagan 147. Rockefeller urged Nixon to repudiate third-party talk.

Johnson Bill Adopts Three Day Weekends for Federal Holidays

The Senate moved a measure to shift five holidays to Mondays starting 1971. Washington's Birthday Memorial Day and Veterans Day would be Monday holidays. Columbus Day would become a Monday in October and Labor Day remains on the first Monday in September. Applies to federal workers and DC only, from Jan. 1, 1970.

A 45 year old Air Research program manager Glaude Culver Kirk was found dead at his Scottsdale home. Police report a self inflicted gun shot wound in the head discovered by his wife around 1 45 am with a .32 caliber pistol found between his legs. He was pronounced dead about 4 am after officers documented the scene.
