Relief convoy fights to break siege at Ben Het camp

U S military spokesmen report a 2000 reinforced convoy with ammunition fought through encircling Communist forces to lift the siege of Ben Het where Green Beret and South Vietnamese defenders repelled four ground assaults killing 153 attackers. North Vietnamese artillery hit the camp and a US C130 Hercules was shot down along with a rescue helicopter wounding three aboard. The Mekong Delta terror campaign continues as a 4000 man US offensive near Khe Sanh, Operation Utah Flat, kills 161 Communists with 28 American deaths and 80 wounded.

McCune Mansion Sale Rescheduled in Maricopa County

A court-ordered postponement affects the Sheriff sale of the Paradise Valley mansion owned by financier Walker McCune. Westbrook Pegler Dies at 74 in Tugson Arizona

Pulitzer prize winning columnist Westbrook Pegler died at 3 30 a m MST at St Marys Hospital Tugson Arizona He had suffered stomach cancer in recent years Pegler rose to fame for blistering attacks on public figures including Franklin D Roosevelt and Harry Truman He retired to his Tugson home five years ago Pegler won the 1941 Pulitzer for exposing labor racketeers Born in Minneapolis he started as a United Press copyboy and served as a World War I war correspondent The virulent writer was known for his sharp critique of phoniness across society

Fire Damage Notices and Multiple Small Blazes Across Area

Rural Fire Department reports several incidents including a cooler motor fire at LeRoy-Barris on N. 4th St causing minor damage and a fire in a pump at Indian Bend Water Co. electrical origin. Earlier Grass and brush fires occurred around Granite Reef Highland Hayden Scottsdale Oak and McDowell areas with various times in the afternoon and evening.

Thieves Burglary Spree Ends With No Loss In Scottsdale

Scottsdale police investigated three burglaries on Monday with no apparent loss. Break ins at A Z Dairy drive in 1626 S 87th St caused $50 damage to an empty cash register. R C Romanella home at 6402 E Exeter Blvd saw crates of mineral samples broken. Plain n Fancy restaurant at 7043 E McDowell had a cooler cover removed but nothing taken.

Black Panther coloring book urges killings of police

Senate investigators heard San Francisco police describe a Black Panther Coloring Book given with free breakfasts to black children. It depicts black youths shooting and stabbing white policemen and calls them pigs. Police say the book circulated during Panther breakfast programs at Sacred Heart Church and Jedediah Smith Elementary School.

Arizona to collect at least 85 million in state sales tax

Arizona will collect at least 85 million dollars in state sales tax during fiscal 1969 70, the Tax Commission estimated. Cities and counties will share about 49.7 million of the total, a figure 10 million higher than last year’s forecast. Kent Seldon, Phoenix budget director, noted the commission often understates collections to provide a cash balance for year end.

Tax Hike Targets Torrea Property in Phoenix Area

Maricopa County supervisors raised the valuation of 81 acres in east Phoenix from 166000 to 466000 after Assessor Kenneth Kunes recommended the increase. The land between 48th and 52nd streets from Van Buren to Washington is held by family members who founded Torren Packing Co. The board also boosted the Douglas ranch near Wickenburg from 3 to 7 per acre, affecting about 62000 acres in total.

State Education Board to study sex education methods

The Arizona state board of education will study sex education problems and hear from parents and psychiatrists. The Arizona School Board Association urged a board position and suggested a course and method of study for optional local district use.

Escapee Nabbed After Quick Scottsdale Breakout

An 18 year old Scottsdale man, Robert Michael Carvalho of 4925 N 82nd St, was recaptured minutes after a jail break. Police say he carried a bayonet in a place of amusement and bolted from custody near the jail entrance before being caught following a chase with officers.

Man dies in Cave Creek fire identified as caretaker Alford Milburn

The Maricopa County Sheriff's Office identified the victim as 57 year old Alford Milburn, caretaker at Black Mountain Ranch in Cave Creek. The fire at his small frame dwelling was reported Monday morning by Harold Nolte, who saw flames and returned with Richard Ripplinger to pull Milburn from the doorway. Milburn died at the scene after reaching the door. cause under investigation with preliminary notes suggesting a stove or water heater explosion.

Beeline Road Work Planned For Beeline Highway

State Route 87 known as the Beeline Highway will be resurfaced this summer over a 21 4 mile section from McDowell Road intersection northeast. Arizona Refining Co. won the contract with a bid of 11711 dollars, below the state estimate of 13249 dollars. The project includes sealing the roadway and must be finished before July 31.
