Campaign expands civil disobedience phase after Solidarity Day

The Poor People's Campaign moves into a more intense civil disobedience phase following a large protest, with leaders stating actions will escalate. About 77 marchers were arrested near the Agriculture Department, as police used tear gas and clubs amid clashes with Resurrection City residents.

Happy Ending Follows City Canoe Story at Eldorado Park

City Public Director Marc Stragier, a Sea Scout advisor, overturned a canoe while teaching Campfire Girls boat safety at Eldorado Park. He said neighbors and city employees lampooned him at his home last night, and the crowd grew until they decided to hold a party.

Vihlen Sighting 25 Miles Off Delray Beach

Hugo Vihlen was sighted afloat about 25 miles off Delray Beach in the Gulfstream aboard the six foot sailboat April Fool. The First Edition crew reported his position to the Coast Guard and said he refused a tow calling for self powered entry.

Kidnap Charge Filed in Prescott Case

Martin Joe Carr, 33, of Tacoma Washington, held in Yavapai County jail after allegedly abducting two couples and assaulting two girls. Arrested in Flagstaff, he was returned to Prescott where he faces kidnapping charges for taking Darrell McIntosh 19 and James Wilder 20 alongside two 18 year old female companions. Rape charges possible for the alleged attacks on the two girls.

Scottsdale seeks first youth counselor for city

Police Chief Walter Nemetz screens 14 applicants for Scottsdale's inaugural youth counselor post. Final choice rests with City Magistrate Ed Boyle and a city board next week. The counselor will assist with juvenile problems and probation cases, starting July 1 at a $529 monthly salary. County Judge Thomas Tang hails the move as a real step forward.

Saigon Rockets Persist as Officer Captured

Vietnamese officials reported the capture of Maj. Hunh Thanh Dong, a Viet Cong rocket commander, while Saigon endured the day’s heaviest shelling in nine days. Rockets hit central Saigon and Tan Son Nhut, killing six and wounding twenty, as civilians suffered.

Quiet Day for Rural Fire Department amidst Brush Fires

It was a quiet day for the Rural Fire Department on Thursday with two brush fire reports. Firefighters answered one alarm in Scottsdale at 11:54 a.m. at 68th Street and McDowell, and another field fire west of Camelback Mall at 4:20 p.m. A man arrived at the station with a ring stuck on his finger, which firefighters removed.

The City of Scottsdale adopts Ordinance 400 vacating and abandoning a portion of public right of way under Application No 4-A-68. The West 16.0 of the Ski of the NW34 of the NEEM of Section 26 with exceptions is set for removal, pursuant to ARS 18-501 to 18-602, to preserve public safety with an emergency clause.
