UPI reports American combat deaths last week surpass twenty five thousand total with three hundred sixty three thousand nine hundred thirty five Communist deaths, while Viet Cong losses drop for a second week. Hijacked DC9 Airliner Bound for Cuba

A Venezuela DC9 flying Miami to Caracas with 76 aboard was hijacked over the Caribbean and forced to land in Cuba. Four Americans were aboard including Henry and Wanda Haslen and Edward Russo. Capt Harry Gibson was identified as pilot. Cuban authorities confirmed landing at Santiago and requested details.

Rep Tony Carrillo Pleads Guilty in Tax Matter

Tucson lawmaker Rep Tony Carrillo pleaded guilty to filing false information on an amended 1964 state income tax return. A fraud charge was dismissed. Judge Mary Anne Richey treated the case as a misdemeanor due to his probation report and public service record.

Committee OKs gun ban bill in House

The House Judiciary Committee approved by 29 to 6 a Johnson administration bill banning mail order sales of all firearms and restricting over the counter sales. It sets 21 as the minimum age for handguns, 18 for rifles and shotguns, and bars interstate ammunition shipments.

Heat Strains Jaycee Parade In Arizona Convention

The 48th national Jaycee convention parade in Phoenix was cut short after four hours as about 150 marchers suffered heat prostration and were treated and released. The 40 float event drew 5 000 participants, with many seeking cooling at Red Cross aid stations near the Westward Ho.

Man caused fires burn in Arizona forests

Two man caused fires raged in Arizona forests with crews kept on the lines. In Coronado National Forest about 1,200 acres burned as 100 men fought the blaze and additional crews arrived. In Tonto National Forest near Baker Mountain a 160 acre fire was tackled by Navajo crews with air support and bulldozers. Five other smaller fires were reported, with lightning blamed for two near Tucson and additional hot spots in the region.

Sherwood Heights Residents Oppose Zoning Change

About 50 Sherwood Heights Estates residents filled a city council meeting to oppose Margaret Pease's bid for multiple residential zoning on the southwest corner of 60th St and Thomas Rd. Attorneys Murphy and Burton argued until the matter was tabled for further agreement.

Fires Spread and Alarms Keep Rural Fire Crew Busy

In 24 hours the Rural Fire Department responded to two false alarms three brush fires and a gasoline can incident at 7436 E Virginia Ave and other locations. Firefighters opened the leaking can washed the carport and prevented damage with no injuries reported. They also tackled a wiring short at 2102 N 68th Pl and a car fire at Kiva School with no damage documented.
