Taxes Discussed and the Interest Equalization Tax

William A Doyle explains that the pending interest equalization tax on foreign securities is not yet law but would tax American buyers purchasing from nonAmericans up to 15 percent, with potential retroactive effect to July 18, 1963. A Certificate of American Ownership can exempt sellers’ transactions from the tax, though final form remains uncertain and loopholes exist. The term Dillon’s nightmare labels the proposal as a balance of payments stopgap and questions about taxation of stock dividends are addressed, noting stock dividends are not taxed.

Surplus Barracks Moved to Salt River Reservation for Youth Center

A surplus barracks from Williams AFB was moved to the Salt River Indian Reservation near Chandler and bolted to a foundation by the Salt River day school. Tribal Chairman Vernon Smith announced the plan to remodel it for about 450 reservation children. The building, declared surplus by the Air Force, was procured by the Bureau of Indian Affairs and moved by a joint effort including the reservation agency, tribal members, and a Marine Reserve engineering company from Mesa. It cost 800 to truck and was funded by the Save the Children Federation Community Development Fund. The WWII-vintage structure is among several moved from Williams since 1962, according to tribal business manager Gen. George Cassady.
