Five Die In Lake Pontchartrain Bus Plunge

An eight passenger Continental Trailways bus plunged into Lake Pontchartrain near the New Orleans end of the causeway killing five and injuring others. The bus driver Ernest Vaugin, 38, from Jackson Mississippi and passenger William Cockerham of Baton Rouge were identified among the dead. Divers recovered three bodies and a woman was among the deceased. The bridge remained closed as Coast Guard divers assisted in recovering the victims and a derrick attempted to lift the submerged bus.

Miss Scottsdale Beauty Contest Slated at Papago Plaza

Papago Plaza hosts the annual Miss Scottsdale pageant on July 2 at 8 p.m. Open to Scottsdale area girls ages 18 to 27 who are unmarried and residents. Judges include Mayor John Woudenberg and local business leaders. The winner advances to Miss Arizona on July 19 and then Miss Universe path.

Bus Slams Truck In California Crash Injures 14

A Continental Trailways bus rear ended a flatbed truck on U S 60 near Indio California injuring at least 14 people. Bus driver Lloyd Elbert Alfen aged 60 from Lynwood fractured a knee while 13 passengers suffered minor injuries and were treated at Desert Hospital in Palm Springs. One injured rider was 72 year old Mrs A Boss of Phoenix.

Rights Bill Delay Seen in Senate Stall

Senator Richard Russell disclosed that southern lawmakers may delay final Senate action on the civil rights bill until next week. He noted the caucus intends to use the full one hour allowed per senator under cloture, with many amendments likely. Speaker McCormack hopes for quick House action once it passes the Senate.

Barry Goldwater Sponsors Move To File Nominating Petitions

Phoenix reports supporters of Senator Barry Goldwater plan to file nominating petitions Wednesday as letters go out to signers. Eric Marks, assistant campaign director, said signatures collected are enough to place Goldwater on the Arizona Republican primary ballot and petitions will be filed early to confirm his primary intentions.

Priest DuBay Visits Los Angeles Chancery Amid Cardinal Dispute

Father William H. DuBay met with Msgr. Benjamin Hawkes at the Los Angeles archdiocese chancery while Cardinal McIntyre continued his retreat. DuBay stated no comment after a 40 minute talk and affirmed his loyalty to the church while supporters urged action on racial equality.
