In comments to editors, Kennedy asserts the United States will stay engaged in Laos negotiations. He rejects dramatic shifts in strategy and emphasizes continued support for proposed measures and the balance of power considerations.
President Kennedy has a painful back strain likely to require crutches for a while. The ailment stemmed from a May 16 tree planting in Ottawa and was kept secret during his Europe trip. White House aides say he may avoid crutches for another day as treatment continues.
A spokesman said Eleanor Roosevelt and the Tractors for Freedom Committee will not travel to Havana to negotiate with Fidel Castro over the release of 1200 Cuban prisoners. Mrs Roosevelt criticized Castro’s demand as unrealistic in her column My Day and discussions with labor leaders and ambassadors were reported as not resolving the matter.
Charles Dunlap, Scottsdale High senior, elected secretary of state at Boys State in Flagstaff defeating Tommy Tang 170 to 111. He is son of Mr and Mrs Charles Dunlap of 7512 Lakeside Drive Woodie Dow, Dow son of Mr and Mrs Richard Dow. Dow previously ran as write in for governor at Scottsdale High.

Jackie Riley seven-year-old son of Mr and Mrs Jack Riley of 420 Se Miller Road faced a scary ascent up a parish tree at Second Street and Miller. A passing motorist alerted rural fire crews who used a ladder to rescue the frightened boy after his courage faltered and he refused to continue climbing.
