U.S. envoy Harriman warned the Soviet Union that Washington views renewed cease fire violations by Pathet Lao forces in Laos as serious. The statement followed Harriman's discussions with Pushkin about informing Moscow of the gravity of the latest attack against royal Laotian government troops in the Padong area.
U.S. officials weigh the Laos cease fire violations amid a Communist offensive. Some sources suggest abandoning the Geneva conference on Laos would be serious, though officials say the United States would not abandon it without careful deliberation to avoid renewing the Laos civil war.
Reports from Vientiane say Communist backed rebel forces have captured the Laotian government stronghold Padong. The top American diplomat has contacted the Soviet counterpart outside the conference room amid the crisis.
UPI reports Royal Lao forces and Meo tribesmen retreated after a nightlong assault by Laotian Reds near Padong. An American military advisory team said Padong defenders withdrew their headquarters to an alternate position after artillery barrages and infantry attacks.
President Kennedy described weekend talks with Khrushchev in Vienna and meetings with de Gaulle Macmillan and Berlin as open but no concessions or progress. He warned the arms race with the Soviet Union would continue with Soviet veto power over nuclear tests and a somber view on Berlin. The address followed talks with congressional leaders at the White House.
The Scottsdale district plans a tentative 6.80 tax rate based on a 30 percent expected property value increase. The Scottsdale library schedule shows evening hours Monday and Thursday 7 to 9 p.m. and daily operation Monday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. The notice, by Hester Slocum, indicates open access for residents.
In Detroit the Ameri can tractors for Cuba committee weighs Fidel Castro's demand that fund raisers travel to Havana to negotiate the tractors for Cuba proposal. Castro's new condition followed the May 17 trade acceptance and a UPI deadline for an official reply. Officials say they will confer by telephone and may answer tonight.
Glenn Wilkerson of Phoenix Insurance offered to handle the Scottsdale land transaction owned by Mrs. Jewel Night in Tempe city limits at 54 000 dollars. John Savoy, attorney for Mrs. Night, said her suit against the land sale was not dismissed and the case remains active as of last night.
