Six GIs electrocuted by flagpole on power line at Virginia field
Six soldiers from the 4th Engineer Port Construction Company were killed when a 40 foot flagpole they were erecting on a Little League field in Springield VA toppled onto a high tension wire. The incident occurred as they struggled to steady the pole, igniting clothing and causing a large flash. Names identified include Pvt Charles P Oliver and Spec 4 Kenneth G Steiner among others. Rescue workers delayed removal until power could be cut off and medical examiner Dr William Enos said death was virtually instantaneous.
