The Republican majority barely survived a two member bell to pass the reapportionment bill in the 60 member House. The final tally was 41 to 27, the smallest votes required to pass. The bill moved to the Senate where leaders planned to push it through at 2 p.m.
During a three day special session the Arizona chamber moved toward a final vote on a reapportionment bill as Gladys Gardner and William Lyman joined 25 Democrats in opposing it. They protested the failure to realign congressional districts, while Sam Steiger urged enlarging his district with Northwest Maricopa Republicans. Democrats accused the plan of unconstitutional gerrymandering. Republicans countered with claims of fairness.
The plan assigns most of the Scottsdale area to two new legislative districts, Districts 4 and 5. District 4 covers areas east of Tatum and north of Thomas Road with dog legs to the Salt River along Pima Road, while District 5 lies south of Thomas between Pima Road and 12th Street, with boundaries along Oak, McDowell, Roosevelt, and Van Buren streets.
