Secretary of the Interior Stanley K. Hathaway quits citing personal health concerns. President Ford accepts the resignation with sympathy as Hathaway is under medical and psychiatric care at Bethesda Naval Medical Center for fatigue, low mood, and a mild diabetes case. he entered the hospital July 16.
A long range Paradise Valley area land use plan proposes an open space greenbelt along Indian Bend Wash similar to Scottsdale to guide growth from 56 000 residents now to 169 200 by 2000. The plan favors single family housing with mixed density and three research oriented industrial sites near Cactus Road Tatum Boulevard and Cave Creek Road. It retains a relocated Indian Bend Freeway along the Granite Reef Aqueduct line echoing Scottsdale positions.
City council members approve a forum on aging to be held Sept. 25. Billie Gentry says the forum will outline senior citizen concerns, aiming for broad community input on housing transportation health nutrition loneliness and legal issues. The STEP Committee is planning a senior facility near the Scottsdale Mall with ongoing coordination with subcommittees and architect Wilson Jones.
Stephanie Schnell bravely places her head in a lion mouth for a cool sip from an unusual fountain during a Phoenix Zoo visit. The Children’s Zoo houses real farm animals and cartoon figures while genuine wild animals are kept in cages and compounds elsewhere. The zoo stays open every night this summer.
President Ford proposes a phased price control unwind over 39 months and an $11.50 per barrel ceiling on domestic oil production. Administration experts foresee a six cent per gallon rise in petroleum prices by 1978 as a result. Phoenix police arrested Daniel Schroeder a 26 year old jewel firm employee and Ricky Ross 22 for a staged heist at Broad way department store in Biltmore Fashion Park. About 43000 dollars in jewels were found in Schroeder apartment with more loot to be recovered from a bank box. They were booked for theft by embezzlement.
The Arizona Water Commission will provide Scottsdale with 221234 as the state's share of flood control projects completed in the past year. City engineer George Iannella said eligible costs total 506000 and claims sought 253000. The commission met to apportion 2153348 in flood funds amid a 176000 legislative appropriation.
Arizona touring ensemble of 30, led by co producers Jon Talton and Korie Pelka, seeks about $30,000 to continue rehearsals for an October regional tour. donors include First National Bank staffer Fiske Martin and Scottsdale Paradise Valley Bicentennial group, while officials fear cancellation or script publishing if funding fails.
Motorola SPD officials deny ongoing rumors of layoffs. An internal statement from the office of the general manager says no immediate job cuts are planned, citing current order levels. Signed by John R. Welty, SPD assistant general manager. Motorola remains a major employer with plants in Scottsdale Phoenix Tempe and Mesa.
