The House voted to ban the sale of any part of Camp Pendleton adjacent to President Nixon's California estate but did not halt public use of about 6 1/2 miles of the base.
Military bill bars disposal of Pendleton beach land
The provision inserted in the military construction authorization bill by Armed Services Committee Chairman F Edward Hebert D La blocks disposal of any portion of the base along the Pacific coast unless authorized by law. It allows lease of the Pendleton beach to California while the government retains ownership and can seize land in a national emergency. California has leased 3 1 2 miles. Hebert says retaining control prevents future buyback at high cost and avoids a potential housing project.
