About 30 inmates, including Black Panthers, seized two guards at Orleans Parish Prison in a dawn uprising over rat bites and living conditions. Police surrounded the facility as Sheriff Heyd, Mayor Landrieu, and state Rep Dorothy Taylor negotiated with Panther attorneys. The guards were unharmed.
Negotiations to end the railroad walkout broke down over longer crew runs as the UTU expanded strikes on four top carriers including Southern, Union Pacific, Southern Pacific and Norfolk & Western, threatening coal mines and harvest shipments. Assistant Labor Secretary W. J. Usery warned the outlook was hazy and talks were set to resume.
Federal investigators probe the Blanca Peak disaster in Colorado where a twin engine Piper Aztec carrying five Pacemaker auto racing team members from Phoenix and Scottsdale crashed at 13,500 feet. The victims W. R. Schnorr 52 Ray Wilson 42 Erving Saul 39 and Gary Weir 30 were recovered by Army helicopter after being spotted by a Colorado Civil Air Patrol plane. They were en route to races at Colorado National Speedway near Erie and Century 21 racetrack east of Aurora.
William Russell Schnorr 52 died in a plane crash en route to a Denver auto race. Services 11:30 a.m. Wednesday at A. L. Moore and Sons Mortuary Phoenix. Burial Greenwood Memorial Park. He owned W. R. Schnorr Manufacturing Co. Funeral attendees include wife Mary and children Sharon Frost Pamela Hass Nancy Schnorr Michael. Survivors include parents Evelyn and William Schnorr sister Evelyn Hannon brother Albert, all of Phoenix. Schnorr was WWII veteran and past potentate of El Zaribah Shrine. He led 1964 Western Shrine Association presidency and belonged to Elks 339 Masons Phoenix Rotary.
Raymond Edward Wilson age 42 died in a plane crash near Alamosa Colorado. Services will be held at Green Acres Mortuary with burial in Green Acres Memorial Gardens. He lived in Scottsdale and worked as a Pennwall Chemical salesman. He was valedictorian at El Centro High School and attended Imperial Valley College. Survivors include wife Diane son Lester Allen 14 daughter Rebecca Ruth 17, mother Bessie Wilson San Diego brother H Donald and three sisters.
A fire caused 80 dollars in damage to a building at 8414 East McDonald housed by a convenience market. Firemen blamed poor housekeeping after janitorial materials near a boiler ignited. A paper boy spotted the blaze at 6 15 a m.
Thieves took coins and currency totaling 319 dollars from Union Jack Restaurant at 1406 N Scottsdale Rd. between 9:30 p m Friday and 9 a m Saturday. Police say entry was gained with a key, a safe dial was removed from a refrigerator to open the safe, and the thieves returned the dial before fleeing via a rear door.
Throngs packed beaches and rooftops as Apollo 15 blasted toward the moon in Florida. Crowds estimated at half a million filled roadsides and campsites, with traffic police noting heavy crowd levels and packed state highways.
More than 2,923 Arizona copper workers were recalled as Magma Copper and Miami Copper reached agreements after 24 hour bargaining. San Manual plant to reopen while Superior remains on summer shutdown. 575 at Miami plant and 3,348 at Magma affected. Six other firms faced ongoing talks as negotiations continued.
