Tax reform debate shifts as Senate backs reconsideration
Senate votes shifted amid a tax reform showdown led by Senator Kennedy and Senator Muskie. A 93-27 approval of an across the board income tax cut was overturned by a 48-27 decision to send the measure back to Senator Long’s committee for reconsideration. Kennedy and Muskie also backed a higher minimum tax and a raised personal exemption, while oil industry tax breaks loomed as a possible target in the ensuing debate.
