Nudist clash jolts Santa Barbara public life

In Santa Barbara California a nudist controversy sparked by 600 to 700 beachgoers clashing with conservative norms led the county Board of Supervisors to approve an ordinance banning nudity in public or publicly viewable places effective January 16. The measure, 3-2, faced immediate legal challenge as unconstitutional and discriminatory, with critics noting it only restricts topless women while allowing barechested men. Public debate intensified after Parade Magazine coverage and Coast Daylight train passengers near a nudist beach photographed the scene.
