Wallace Muhammad Named Leader as Elijah Muhammad Dies
Wallace Muhammad, 40, chosen by Elijah Muhammad to head the Black Muslims and direct its spiritual work, leads thousands at a memorial for his father who died at Mercy Hospital after weeks in critical condition. Tributes come from Chicago Mayor Daley and Rev. Jesse Jackson as the Nation of Islam mourns its longtime leader. Muhammad is remembered as a father of Black self-consciousness who sought to lift communities from slums.
