Ford says tax relief likely not until June

President Ford pressed Congress to act on his 1974 tax rebate and 1975 tax cut, warning no relief before June if pace does not quicken. He criticized both chambers for delays, said hearings start next week, and urged action by mid March with veto risks over import levies and energy plans. Ford also commented on pardons for Watergate figures and urged non-discrimination by foreign investors.

Ford deficit climbs to 53.7 billion for 1976

UPI reports budget chief James T. Lynn told the Joint Economic Committee the fiscal 1976 deficit would total 53.7 billion, up from Ford's Feb 3 forecast of 51.9 billion due to highway funds release and food stamp plan changes. Humphrey says the figure understates the gap. House Democrats plan early passage of big-employment appropriations next month to speed hiring.

Fannin Attacks Strip Mining Rules Impact on Costs

Senator Paul Fannin argues that new surface mining legislation would raise coal costs by about 8.4 percent, reduce coal supply, and threaten about 46 000 jobs. He warns utilities would face higher prices and must import oil, worsening electricity rates. He cites studies linking mining limits to higher utility costs and coal shortfalls.
