Rhee warned the move could lead to legalization of gambling as days of racing rise. Municipalities say $4.3 million in new revenue won’t fix street needs. Phoenix seeks $3 million more.
The Maricopa County Board of Supervisors adopted an air pollution code to curb dust and dirty air in the Salt River Valley. The ordinance, to be enforced by the county health department, imposes 48 hour correction notices, possible shutdowns, and hearings for protests, and bans open burning while regulating incinerators emissions and discharge timing from industrial and commercial sources.
Superior Court Judge William A. Holohan ruled a suit seeking equalization of Maricopa County property tax assessments premature. The case, led by Atty. Stuart Shoob for over 2,000 taxpayers, seeks uniform taxation at actual cash value. A June board meeting of Supervisors as board of equalization is cited as a needed prerequisite.
The heavyweight title fight in Miami Beach was postponed six to seven days to allow Sonny Liston’s sprained knee to heal. Promoter Championship Sports, Inc. said a decision would come Wednesday on staging the bout on April 10 or 11 at the Miami Beach Convention Hall.
Scottsdale trustees chose five architectural firms to design additions to nine elementary schools and two high schools funded by a $3.4 million bond. Firms varied, with speakers noting selection based on staff size, experience, and ability to deliver economical designs, regardless of local origin.
Early returns from 12 polling places show 1,704 ballots cast by 11 a.m. on a $3.4 million bond. Scottsdale PTA and district officials push Get Out The Vote while high school and elementary projects drive a total $3,455,000 bond for classrooms sites and expansions.
Maricopa County funds a comprehensive master plan for Salt River Project canals 200 miles long to create recreational use including riding trails hiking canoeing fishing and picnicking. Design Arts Inc. of Phoenix won a $1 875 contract to survey existing parks near the canals with county as the over all planning authority and cities to build in incorporated areas.
The Paradise Valley School No. 2 eviction dispute delays resumed hearings for nine days as County Attorney Udall files objections to a judge’s ruling that the school is illegally occupied at 9827 N 32nd Street. If not reversed the decision, Udall may appeal to the Arizona Supreme Court.
Police reported burglars struck five Scottsdale businesses last night stealing loose change from coke machines and cash drawers. A second wave Sunday night hit four more firms, possibly by the same gang, including Guyot Texaco Service Station, The Laundromat, Burts Safe Car Service, The Dairy Queen, and the A and W Root Beer stand in Scottsdale.
In Phoenix the measure would let counties establish a public defender office. Co sponsors Fred Smith and Tony Carillo say the defender would represent those unable to pay for counsel, replacing court appointed cases funded by the county.

Federal mediators race against the clock to avert a Southern Pacific clerks strike set for 7 p.m. Arizona time. The 11 000 member union seeks retraining for displaced workers amid a five year dispute over automation.
Steven Huson aged 15, son of Mr and Mrs Kent Huson of 3520 North 63rd Place Scottsdale, was listed in critical condition at Good Samaritan Hospital after a two story fall into an elevator shaft at Brownmoor Estates on East Indian School Road while delivering newspapers at about 5 30 a m yesterday. Doctors expect he will likely recover completely after a six hour surgery on his right side. He may have double vision in his right eye but it can be corrected later.
Committees of the Arizona House and Senate met to debate tax equalization legislation amid closed sessions. Rep. John Haugh opposed a moratorium on reassessment arguing it may prolong inequality courts would delay solving the reappraisal problem. A proposed division of assessment and appraisal would be created in the State Tax Commission to direct statewide reappraisal.
