Diane Apfelbaum in Philadelphia collects 15,000 antique Valentines dating mainly from the mid 19th century. Her favorites include three dimensional standup cards and penny dreadfuls from the 1880s, with values now up to 150 dollars or more.
Scottsdale's January sales tax receipts totalled $495,682, up 6.6 percent from a year earlier, with autos driving gains at about $57,000 and food stores up 20.5 percent. Construction fell about 14 percent, hotels and motels rose 34 percent, and department stores declined eight percent due to payment distortions. For seven months, collections rose 7.4 percent to $2.908 million.
Lockheed Aircraft Corp. forced the resignation of its top two executives, chairman Daniel J. Haughton and vice chairman A. Carl Kotchian, amid a $600 million debt and a kickback scandal. Kotchian admitted to Congress that the company paid officials in several countries at least $22 million to aid aircraft sales.
The White House adopts a pessimistic stance on sustaining President Ford's veto of a $6.1 billion public works jobs bill. Ford labeled it election year pork and argued it would not meaningfully create jobs. Supporters countered the plan would create about 600,000 jobs.
George Wallace and two other Democratic presidential hopefuls push for uncommitted support as Mississippi moves toward selecting national convention delegates. Wallace aide Jack Shearer Jr. says the Alabama governor will gain momentum at county conventions and aim to win at least 16 of the 24 delegates.
A knife wielding man described by a sheriff's spokesman offered a key clue in the case. Sal Mineo died from a heart wound after an attack near his West Hollywood apartment carport. Police found no weapon at the scene.
UN Secretary General Kurt Waldheim said the Angola conflict is an African problem and the United Nations will not intervene unless requested. He spoke in Bangkok after arriving to meet Thai Prime Minister Kukrit Pramoj and noted no state has asked the UN to intervene in the Angolan civil war.

Rep. Sam Steiger said he would back Rep. John Conlan if Conlan is the Republican nominee for the Senate seat vacated by Sen. Paul Fannin. At a Scottsdale Hilton forum, Conlan did not pledge but later told the Progress he would back Steiger if he is the GOP choice.

City Clerk Fern Nell announced that only three young men can receive valid write-in votes in the upcoming city primary. Bob Flanigan aged 19 is mayoral, Eric Andreasen 19 and David Fowle 22 seek council seats. no new filings were made by 5 p.m. Friday. Write-ins for others will not be counted though ballots marked properly will not be discarded.
Tuesday's city primary will choose a mayor and three council members among Jay Gaskins William C Jenkins and others with write ins Bob Flanigan Eric Andreasen and David Fowle. If no clear majority for three seats the top vote getters advance to a March 23 general election. Voters registered by Dec 29 may participate at 13 polling places across Scottsdale from 6 am to 7 pm.
Arizona Board of Regents authorized reviewing the long range expansion policy before 1980 amid rising legislative action to probe an ASU branch campus in west Phoenix. The panel also forms a personnel committee and contemplates housing moves at Tempe campus.
City of Scottsdale offices and services will operate Monday for George Washington's Birthday. Phoenix Maricopa County state and federal offices close. No refuse collection in Phoenix. Post Office closed with no mail. Scottsdale schools and district offices closed. Banks and New York Stock Exchange closed.
