A chartered flight carrying Oklahoma residents to a resort development sliced through power lines near Houston Intercontinental Airport and crashed in a muddy field. Rescuers found five bodies and eleven survivors were hospitalized with injuries and fuel inhalation among rescue workers.
Two creeks flooded the city causing at least one death and leaving about 500 people displaced. Police chief M. C. Roebuck said six persons were still missing as damage ran into millions of dollars.
The Nixon Memorial Library project is scrapped as 25 trustees, all close to Nixon, vote to dissolve the Nixon Library Foundation. Patricia Reilly Hitt reported the decision on Friday.
CDC reports flu and pneumonia fatalities topped the epidemic threshold for the third straight week, with 745 deaths in the week ending Jan. 25, exceeding the expected winter mortality for the period.

The Maricopa County Board of Supervisors will hear a plan to issue tax free bonds to retire a 9 million dollar hospital debt at Scottsdale Memorial Hospital. If approved the plan could save the hospital up to 225000 dollars annually, with average savings of 125000 dollars over 25 years. The plan is supported by the Maricopa County Industrial Authority and faces questions from Supervisor Robert Corbin. Also on the agenda bids for two bridges over Indian Bend Wash and a land transfer for an electric transmission line to Thompson Peak.
President Ford announced a 349 billion dollar federal budget for fiscal 1976 with a 52 billion dollar deficit, and warned that failing to enact his proposed 17 billion dollar reductions could raise the deficit to nearly 70 billion. He urged Congress to walk the extra mile to restore economic health while seeking tax cuts and energy measures.
State Representative Mac Carvalho of Scottsdale argues the State Personnel Board is a costly bureaucracy and should be eliminated. He criticizes its pay recommendations for top administrators, calling for agency level hiring and firing power and legislative oversight instead.
Hashknife Gang riders drop by Scottsdale to visit the new Bank of Scottsdale during Parada del Sol. Bill Mack and Myron Diebel, both with the Holbrook faction, rode into the bank front door and announced a deposit. Staff, including manager Michael Foster, laughed off the stunt and welcomed the hoof prints as a parade gesture.
Fifth grade pupil at Pueblo School is suspended on January 10 after his mother filmed his class as part of a dispute over reading materials. Scottsdale School District orders the family from campus as a hearing set for February 5. father cites lack of due process and relates actions to a long protest over magazines including Time and Playboy.
