Tragedy in Corpus Christi: Navy family slain and mother commits suicide
Mary Jean Whalen 32 fatally shot her husband CPO Robert Wayne Whalen 33 and four children ages 3 to 12 as they slept in the Gulfway Manor Apartments. She then killed herself with a .38 pistol. Police described a bizarre, unprovoked massacre followed by notes giving no clear motive.

Jenkins loses round in bond dispute over narcotics arrests
Phoenix judge voids high bonds set by Justice of the Peace Ralph Jenkins for Brian Porter and John Levy. Porter and Levy were initially released on their own recognizances and $1650 bonds respectively after Tuesday night arrests for marijuana sales. Superior Court Judge Robert Myers ordered the bonds lowered to their original amounts terming the $22,000 bonds excessive. Jennings had set the higher bonds believing the suspects were arrested in his precinct.

Nine Hurt in Two Car Collision on Bell Road
Sheriff deputies report nine people were injured in a two car crash on Bell Road near Scottsdale Road. Frances Mahan and several family members were treated at Scottsdale Memorial Hospital. two passengers in the other car were listed as injured, but not treated there. The wreck occurred when Gass's car attempted to pass the other vehicle.
