Family requests contributions to St. Vincent de Paul Society at St. Theresa’s. Cleland Barker, 62, died Friday at home. Services today at Messinger Chapel. Interment Green Acres Memorial Gardens. Barker born in Corning, N.Y. and worked for Corning Glassware. retired in June and moved to Scottsdale. Survived by wife Dorothy, two sons Bruce F and Lorene R, a daughter, mother Hazel G, two brothers and two sisters out of state, five grandchildren. Contributions to American Cancer Society requested.

Elza Carl Helser 60 died Saturday at Good Samaritan Hospital. Services were held at Messinger Mortuary with interment at Memory Lawn Cemetery. He lived at 8613 E. Thomas and moved to the Valley in 1947. Survivors include wife Gretchen and daughter Linda S. Dean of Phoenix, mother Mrs. Ethel Helser of Mount Vernon Ohio, two grandchildren.

Auto ends up in drink after canal tow incident
Sheriff's deputies said Steven Dipple, 16, of 8101 E Cambridge, towed a friend along the Arizona Canal east of Salt River Indian Reservation when the steering failed. The car, a 1966 foreign model, slid down the canal bank and landed upright in the water with the surfer also in the drink.

Two Car Fires and a Smoking Light Damage Scotts dale Weekend
Firemen answered calls to two car fires and a smoking light fixture at the former Progress building in Scottsdale Rural Fire Department coverage over the weekend. Eugene Tarr and Manuel Lopez each owned burned cars with damages. one blamed on a faulty carburetor and another $60 loss. Fire crews arrived to extinguish the cars, while a light ballast caused smoking before a progress building call. Damage estimated around $25 for the light.
