Final irrigation date key to yield and quality of cotton
Upland cotton bolls mature in about 45 days in warm weather and 60 days or more if cool weather occurs, with Pima taking longer. Growers keeping soils well watered can cut irrigation 45 to 60 days before frost. sandy or low water holding soils may need extra irrigation during that period. Timing aims at maximizing mature bolls while minimizing immature bolls and rank growth to sustain vigor and peak yields.
