Two coal miners were rescued early today after being trapped over 300 feet underground in a cold dark chamber. One miner sang a song and the other danced a jig as rescuers reached them in Sheppton Pennsylvania.
Henry Throne and David Fellin were hoisted from an 18 inch shaft after a seven day cave in. They were flown to a hospital in good condition and planned to return to mining. Throne 28 danced upon surfacing and Fellin 38 sang during the ascent as doctors reported stable health with mild numbness and bruising.
A 24 year old Safeway cashier in Phoenix disarmed a 22 caliber revolver wielding kidnapper in the 2801 North Scottsdale Road parking lot. The 21 year old suspect fled northeast across the lot and remains sought.
Partly cloudy through tomorrow with seven chances in ten of afternoon or nighttime thundershowers today and five in ten tomorrow. Temperature remains steady with highs near 96 today and 98 tomorrow, lows around 73 tomorrow. U S Weather Observer Willard L Greene reported Monday's high 92 and today's low 78.

Senator Fulbright said Eisenhower's proposed reservation on US right to use nuclear weapons does not hinder Senate ratification of the nuclear test ban treaty. Tanner Brothers Inc. will start the West Main Street improvement project this week under a $321,079 contract signed after the bid was not withdrawn. The city council overruled a protest claiming the bid award lacked standing due to a pending Maricopa County case. The job, with an engineering estimate of $340,819, shifts focus to Scottsdale Stadium area, to finish next spring.

Her Ecuadorian maid Hilda Cervantes 30 bound and gagged said three thieves robbed and assaulted them. a 13 state man hunt was launched for two men and a woman.
Bulmaro Vasquez Linares, 45, once sentenced to die in Nevada’s gas chamber, was released on parole after nearly eight years in prison. He became an architect while jailed, drew plans for a Carson City shopping city and two homes, and a Mexican library project. Parole requires he never return to the United States and to report to Mexican officials. he will work with the Mexican Architectural Association in Mexico City. He previously lived in Las Vegas under an assumed identity after entering the U.S. in 1945 as a bracero and killing his wife Lacy in 1953. The Mexican government secured commutation from a death sentence to life, enabling parole.
UPI reports the Labor Department index rose to 107.1 in July as pork and fresh vegetables spiked. The increase lifted real buying power to $10.71 for the base period goods, triggering 1 to 3 cent hourly pay hikes for 1,025,000 workers across auto, aerospace, farm and construction equipment industries.
