Scottsdale district enrollment forecast shows decline in elementary schools

Projected fall figures for Scottsdale schools indicate a continued drop in elementary enrollment and a slight rise in high school numbers. Elementary students total 15,692 this year, down from 16,445, a 4.6 percent decrease. High schools total 10,523, up from 10,393, about 1.3 percent. The district, once near 29,000, has declined yearly since the late 1960s. District statistician Larry Chaston cites September population as basis and expects high school stabilization in 2–3 years, with elementary gains starting in five years.

Arizona bid preference favors in-state firms in public contracts

The Arizona Court of Appeals ruled that a 5 percent bid preference for in-state contractors applies to public works using federal funds. The decision voided a $22,500 Scottsdale judgment after Deem Construction failed to appeal in time, and affirmed that Deem should have been awarded the Vista de Camino Neighborhood Center contract in Scottsdale, originally built by California firm GTS Construction Co. in 1972. Scottsdale argued the preference could not be used with federal funds.

Ford urges debates after Labor Day to inform voters

President Ford proposed that his debates with Jimmy Carter begin shortly after Labor Day to let Americans hear each side. He specified dates Sept 8 9 or 10 after a strategy meeting with campaign planners. In other news Ford Motor Co targets UAW contract talks and Goodyear Rubber settles a tentative three year master contract ending a 126 day strike with wage and pension boosts.

Americans Plead Guilty in Moscow Drug Smuggling Case

Three Americans pleaded guilty in a Moscow court to smuggling 62.8 pounds of heroin into the Soviet Union. Gerald Amster of New York and Paul Brawer of Las Vegas, both accused, admitted criminal conspiracy and smuggling after being stopped at Sheremtyevo Airport June 27 while en route from Malaysia to Paris.

Oklahoma man frees hostages in Omaha tavern siege

Police stormed a bunker tavern in Omaha and captured a man from Oklahoma after he held three people at knifepoint for nearly 17 hours. One hostage was killed, another wounded, and a third escaped about 20 minutes earlier. Mayor Zorinsky called the assailant pumped up on drugs.

Senate Rejects Move To Reimpose Postal Service Authority

Tempe Woman Charged in $10000 Extortion Plot

Lynne E. Davis, 26, of Tempe, charged after allegedly trying to extort 10000 from a local businessman. FBI and Scottsdale police tracked the payout at the Scottsdale Public Library where Davis was arrested with the money. authorities say more principals may be involved and the case is under investigation.
