Dan Widner, 17, suffered burns over 85 percent of his body in a gasoline explosion on Aug. 16 at a friend's house. His aunt, Mrs. Frank South of Salem, Ore., said he has regained consciousness and spoken with his parents who remain at his side. Billy Schultz, 14, helped douse the flames and sustained minor burns. The blast occurred while cleaning a storage room floor with gasoline at William E. Schultz’s home, 3332 N. 62nd St.
Senate Interior Committee chairman Henry M. Jackson warned against Arizona and California pursuing diversions from the Columbia River to meet growing Western water needs. He reiterated opposition to any plan to study or build works to carry supplementary water from the Columbia to the Lower Colorado River Basin Project.

Funeral services were conducted for Dewey Hilton Dunlap Jr. 39 killed in a motorcycle crash in Salt River Canyon. He owned Hilton Dunlap used car sales in Phoenix and lived 19 years in the Valley at 2247 N 74th Way. Survivors include wife Barbara two daughters Denise and Deborah two sons Darrel and Denis his parents and three sisters.
A stubborn hay fire destroyed about 15 tons of hay and kept firemen busy for nearly seven hours. The blaze occurred Monday night into Tuesday morning at a haystack on 3030 N Hayden Road, owned by Claude Brunson.
