Escapee Captured After Bar Surrender in Globe Scene
Sheriff deputies arrested 29 year old jail escapee George William Pickard at a Globe area bar Friday night after he asked to surrender and was found seated there armed with a .38 caliber automatic. The man had fled with coescapee Gerald Cecil Newcomb to New Mexico, while Newcomb allegedly sold a gun in Holbrook to fund travel. Newcomb remains at large.

Rescue Holes First Phase Is Completed In Mine Shaft
In Hazleton Pa drillers finished the first phase of widening a 308 foot escape shaft for miners David Fellin and Henry Throne. The 38 foot section was widened to 26 inches and lined with steel to prevent a cave in while a parallel three inch shaft continues toward Louis Bova. Rescue aims to finish widening by Sunday night with the 26 inch bit slowed to avoid collapse.
