Communist police fired on three East Germans fleeing to the West in Berlin. Western allied commandants protested to the Soviet Berlin command against sealing the East West border to Germans.
Twenty five Scottsdale and Arcadia high school students return from a European tour at Sky Harbor Airport. They left Oslo August third aboard the S S Stanvangerfjord and arrived in New York yesterday. Six teens already came home. others stay in New York a few days.
Scottsdale reporter and photographer surveyed downtown residents about whether the United States would enter a war over Berlin. Answers varied but generally dismissed immediate war, predicting continued Cold War tensions and smaller conflicts rather than a full shooting war.
The Scottsdale School Board will cover the 1962 building program and handicapped education. The district plans two new elementary schools and one additional site, with Granite Reef and Jackrabbit roads as a target. Handicapped children now study at Perry Institute or Gompers Memorial Clinic, with a parents committee seeking local school space.
A summer session finale at the Scottsdale Girls Club will include a 9 a.m. swim meet and water ballet show at the municipal pool. The program moves to a parade to the clubhouse at 51 W First Ave with tumbling modeling ballet and a puppet show starting at 10 a.m. Arts and craft displays will be available and Civinettes volunteers will offer refreshments. Girls aged 6 to 16 can enroll for fall sessions at the clubhouse during the event.

City council likely to authorize construction of a new sewerage disposal plant. Scottsdale may still join a four city system under study. Bonding attorneys say $1.4 million funds must stay with the plant unless voters decide otherwise. Fisher Contracting bid $901,367. federal aid $250,000 to offset the difference.
Eastern Airlines crew flew to Havana to return a hijacked airliner taken on July 24 from Miami Beach. A Cuban patrol boat, brought by defectors, was ferried to Havana after landing at Key West with six aboard.
Average Scottsdale property owner faces an 48.84 increase under the 1961 tax schedule. For a typical home valued at about 14 800 and assessed at 25 percent the combined state county city and school tax rises drive the bill higher. The county tax rises 55 cents and Scottsdale city rate falls to 38 cents per 100 valuation.
Scottsdale city council plans to express sentiment on a 11 acre proposed commercial rezoning at Mc Dowell and Scottsdale roads as part of a 40 acre Thrift City complex with Wonderfair and a seven story hotel. The site now lies in the county with residential zoning and may be annexed soon.
Paradise Valley Mayor Patrick Downey asked Attorney General Robert Pickrell to withdraw a challenge to the town's incorporation. The AG's office issued a wait-and-see reply as Pickrell said the state's suit remains active until the Arizona Supreme Court rules. Superior Court Judge Thurman previously ruled Paradise Valley properly incorporated.
