Registration begins Wednesday for about 3,300 new Scottsdale children entering kindergarten and elementary grades as part of an expected 18,300 students district wide. Elementary and kindergarten intake runs 9 a.m. to 4 30 p.m. until school starts, with high schools already open for registration.
Property owners in Scottsdale westside business area will be polled by mail to gauge support for street improvements. The action follows protests against a package plan by the city council, with concerns over storm drains and curbs. The poll is expected within weeks, with work unlikely before after the 1961 62 tourist season.
City Manager Bob McNutt rejected a stop-gap idea to share Tempe’s sewerage capacity as Scottsdale faces a two year wait for a four city master system. Current plant limits and timing push Scottsdale toward a final bid decision with options to build, rebid, or join the four city plan.
Scottsdale officials report a flurry of calls from Arcadia and Paradise Valley residents opposing Phoenix annexation plans. H E Camp says residents prefer Scottsdale annexation and notes no council talks yet. Phoenix aims to circulate petitions for a 15 square mile area northeast of the city limits. A 17 year old Phoenix youth was charged with grand theft after being found in a stolen 1957 Ford in front of a Scottsdale residence. The car belonged to Robert Lindley and had been taken from in front of Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church Sunday evening. The youth admitted taking the car after being refused a borrow request. A 16 year old girl with him said she did not know the car was stolen.
President Kennedy returned to the White House from Cape Cod and met with Ambassador Llewelyn Thompson to discuss Soviet moves in the Berlin crisis. Thompson, fresh from Moscow, declined to add details, saying only that the talk was very interesting.
