Police fanned out across Los Angeles to probe connections between actress Sharon Tate slayings and the La Bianca murders. Victims were mutilated with knife wounds and ritual hooding, with symbols carved and blood messages found at the two crime scenes, suggesting a possible serial linkage.
John Warren Baker of Scottsdale had charges of child molesting dropped for lack of evidence after a 15 year old girl and her mother refused to testify. Judge Harold Holcomb ordered dismissal and cited absence of corroborating testimony and a wallet with nude photos found by the wife. In separate action, Larry Ray Gardner and David Charles Fraizer were bound over to Superior Court on marijuana possession and theft charges. Gardner, 24, Phoenix area, was arrested June 23 after police found marijuana. Fraizer, 19, of Mesa, was arrested July 14 with a stolen motorcycle in a truck.
Three prisoners fled Yuma County jail after prying a cell door latch with a mop handle. Identified escapees Jack Gwaltney 23 Jerry Taylor 25 and Randy Williams 24 45 were thought to be near the California side of the Colorado River just outside Yuma city limits. A cordon of officers searched brushy areas but found no trace as of Sunday following the escape Friday night incident.
The Dow Jones finished slightly lower as the 40 industrials slipped 4.60 points to 019.89 while rails rose to 198.44 and utilities dipped to 115.92. The 65 stocks index stood at 278.26, down 0.78. Trading volume was 6.68 million shares, down from 8.71 million on Friday.

Major Pitman received his second Bronze Star Medal for meritorious service in ground operations against hostile forces in Vietnam while serving as operations officer with the Headquarters Detachment, 48th Transportation Group. He entered service after Ft Eustis assignment and was sent overseas in July of last year.
A 20 year old Tempe man Michael Gaulding was listed in satisfactory condition at Baptist Hospital after a Friday motorcycle collision on Garth Street. He was southbound when Gertrude Nelson 60 pulled left in front of him causing him to strike the right side of her car. Nelson was cited for failure to yield while making a left turn.
A 1 year-old male in Scottsdale nearly died after being found trapped in a freezer for about two hours. Fire Department responders freed him, noted shock and blue coloration, provided oxygen and care, then handed him to ambulance crews for transport to Scottsdale Baptist Hospital.
North Vietnamese and Viet Cong forces mass for an offensive between Saigon and the Cambodian border. Ground fighting shattered a lull with the highest casualty toll in two months. Forty one Americans killed and 170 wounded as battles included a North Vietnamese assault on two Marine camps near the DMZ Sunday.
