The Scottsdale Daily Progress announces an area wide subscription drive offering about 9000 in prizes including a 1961 Oldsmobile Super 88 four door sedan valued at 4456.55 and a second Oldsmobile F85 plus 500 cash as third prize. Weekly 20 percent commissions are paid to active participants.
The Scottsdale Daily Progress offers $25 early starter prizes during the first contest week ending Monday August 14. Qualifying requires at least $125 in subscriptions, with 20 percent commission on top. An extra $25 is awarded for strong first week results, making possible earnings of $100 or more and boosting votes toward major prizes. Get in now as an early participant.
Scottsdale Councilman Art Petersen accuses Phoenix of seeking control over Scottsdale’s sewer system under a regional plan proposed by Engineer John A. Carollo. Carollo says Phoenix would likely own and operate the system with Scottsdale’s share estimated around 5 million dollars, potentially saving over 2 million by 1990.
Mayor Mort Kimsey stormed out during talks on whether Scottsdale streets should adopt metropolitan numbering or remain as extensions of Phoenix. Postmaster Wilson argued for consistency while noting confusion from mixed Scottsdale and metropolitan numbers and duplicate street names. The matter was tabled for later discussion with no date set.
The city council upheld two boards allowing a protest sign in front of the Executive House and ordered the Parking Shelter at Brown and Indian School enclosed with wood. Neighbors feared glare from the stainless sign but lighting was toned down as required. The hotel opens October 1 on North Scottsdale Road.
Scottsdale wins a court battle over annexation and incorporation of Paradise Valley. Superior Judge E R Thurman upheld Scottsdale's annexation along North Scottsdale Road June 21 as valid and ruled Paradise Valley's annexation of part of this area six days later invalid. Paradise Valley faces a separate challenge by the attorney general Aug. 18, with the case expected to go to the state supreme court. Judge Thurman said his finding may not bind the attorney general's suit, and the issue likely will reach the high court.
Space expert Murray Kornhauser warns a meteor mistaken for a missile could trigger war. He urges public education and a radioactive test to distinguish meteors from weapons before retaliatory launches. The talk accompanied a regional Astronautical Society meeting in San Francisco.
