Arcadia Park Purchase and Cactus Road Paving Approved

Phoenix city council okayed negotiating for 8.67 acres in Arcadia for a new park near Indian School Road and S Sixth Street and approved spending 73 000 for immediate paving of Cactus Road from 38th Street to Tatum Boulevard. Vice Mayor Calvin Goode opposed the Arcadia land purchase saying the $59 000 per acre appraisal was too high while City Parks Director Charles Christensen noted the area had promised park land and no nearby alternatives. The council authorized Real Estate Director Alex Cordova to negotiate between a 423 000 appraisal and a 500 000 asking price. Westcor urged delaying action until rezoning for Paradise Valley development. City Manager John Wentz argued a traffic problem and possible five to six year delay, noting the 73 000 road cost is under budget and may be a temporary finish.
