SRP to Release Water into Lakes This Week
Salt River Project will release small amounts of water from Roosevelt Lake into Apache Lake via spillway gates at Roosevelt Dam starting midmorning Wednesday. Water will also move from Apache Lake to Canyon Lake through the Horse Mesa bypass tunnel. Water orders in the Valley exceed generator release, so spillways and bypass tunnel fill orders while keeping other lakes relatively full. Water headed to meet Valley orders will come from Saguaro Lake via generators butterfly valve and Stewart Mountain Dam spillways. All water is diverted into SRP canal system at Granite Reef and none reaches the Salt River Channel below that point. Releases continue around the clock until Valley orders drop below generator capacity or Canyon Lake draw-down begins around June 1.

Boy Hit by Auto In Scottsdale Incident
A three year old Scottsdale boy was treated and released from Scottsdale Baptist Hospital after being struck by a car around 7 45 p m. Police said Mark Joseph Paul of 7254 EB Vernon Road rode his tricycle with his sister when he rode into the street as Claude Winters 18 of 7331 E Oak backed from a driveway. Winters left rear fender struck the boy knocking him to the pavement. The boy was taken to hospital and no citations were issued.

Transformer sets small grass fire near Scottsdale Road
An arcing transformer on a pole at 11436 N Scottsdale Rd sparked a small grass fire around 5 20 p m Monday. Residents using garden hoses had extinguished it before Rural Fires Department arrived. A separate shorted cooler motor caused about 15 damage to Peter Riddle’s home at 8514 E Highland Ave about 8 10 p m. Firemen advised shutting off power and contacting a repairman. They also handled brush fires at 8401 E Roosevelt Ave at 9 55 a m and near the southwest corner of Scottsdale Rd and Vista Dr at 4 31 p m.

Plane crash kills 44 in India during storm near Calcutta
A twin engine Indiana Airlines Fokker Friendship with 40 passengers and 4 crew crashed in a thunderstorm near Khulna East Pakistan, 100 miles northeast of Calcutta.
