Litchfield Park’s Industrial Roots From Hohokam Canals to Modern Village
Historical notes trace Litchfield Park from ancient Hohokam canal systems in the Agua Fria valley to a 20th century agricultural boom led by Goodyear under Paul W. Litchfield. The 1917 cotton drive expanded to 180,000 acres with modern irrigation, rubber tire tractors, cattle farming, and a master plan to build 12 villages around a central city core. Meanwhile in Japan, Jubei Nakamura, age 116, was reported comatose after a stroke, marking the era’s human interest note.

Sparkman proposes lumber yield fund to curb prices
Sen John Sparkman D Ala introduces legislation to raise national forest timber output by funding intensive management through a timber yield fund. The plan uses timber receipts to finance pruning, replanting and road building with no new taxes, aiming to curb soaring softwood prices and meet housing goals. A spokesman noted current forest management lags private timber harvests, and additional funds may divert most of 200 to 300 million dollars in receipts this year. Also two miles of paved roads in Carefree Shadows Development, Arizona, will be completed in about four weeks and maintained by the county.
