Marines suffer worst Khe Sanh loss in single engagement

UPI reports 89 Marines killed wounded or missing in a four hour clash with a fortified North Vietnamese unit southwest of Khe Sanh. B52 strikes on the A Shau Valley followed the attack, part of a large bombardment of the Ho Chi Minh trail amid the siege.

McCarthy open to TV debate with Kennedy in primary

Sen Eugene McCarthy said in Pittsburgh he would accept a television debate with Sen Robert F Kennedy amid their presidential primary battle. He suggested the May 7 Indiana primary as a possible date and argued joint appearances test public contrast between the candidates. He noted speculation that GOP figures Nelson Rockefeller and Ronald Reagan may seek the nomination.

Blaze at Smitty's coffee shop injures oven fire

Rural Fire Department answered an alarm at Smitty's Big Town yesterday at 5 10 p m. Twenty firemen and eight units fought a fire in the oven of the coffee shop. Damage estimated at about 500 dollars. Firemen were on the scene about 45 minutes.

Scottsdale teen injured in two car crash

A 16 year old girl from Scottsdale was injured in a two car collision at Trolian School Road and North 82nd Street. She was taken to Baptist Hospital where she was treated and released. Linda Lou Mulch of 8662 East McDonald Drive was driving east on Indian School Road when her car hit the rear of Dolores Willeford 38 of 8302 East Meadowbrook. Willeford was not hurt and was turning left onto North 82nd Street. Mulch was cited for failure to control a vehicle.

Water Flow Blocks Traffic Near Scottsdale Salt River

Salt River flow south of Scottsdale blocks one road crossing and disrupts several others as reservoirs release water from the Salt and Verde rivers. SRP reports predict the release may continue until May 1 with inflows around 4200 cfs on the Salt River side and 1500 cfs in the channel. Hayden Road remains closed at the river. temporary bridges handle Scottsdale Road and Mill Avenue traffic.
