Phoenix City Attorney Purcell Fired Over Vegas Hospitality Gift
Phoenix City Attorney Joe Purcell was fired after choosing resignation over dismissal for spending two free nights at a Las Vegas hotel, a gift from an assistant city attorney serving part-time as a radio station manager. City Manager John Wentz called it an inexcusable indiscretion. A state employee’s auto emission standards role and job pursuit with firms bidding to run the program prompts an investigation by a citizens subcommittee. A federal grand jury in Phoenix will hear charges against three Navajo tribal officials accused of financial chicanery on the reservation, with Ken Fields and Gary Scales leading the inquiry.

A bid of 947,906 from Bentson Contracting Co. is the apparent low bid for the Scottsdale Road improvement project. The city council will consider awarding the contract Tuesday night. The project resurfaces Scottsdale Road from Osborn to Indian School with curbs gutters and sidewalks and will be partly funded by the federal government. George Iannella says work should start in about two weeks and be finished by September 15. The timing aims to avoid winter traffic, after delays pushed the original plan back a year.

Morton Calls Reagan Budget Plan Unrealistic
Morton told 500 members of the American Business Press that Reagan’s call for a balanced federal budget is unrealistic since 85 percent of the budget is already set by laws like Social Security. He said a balanced budget would not pass in Congress and urged gradual progress toward restraint. Senator Hollings supported regulation, rebutting Ford administration deregulation proposals for natural gas and arguing regulation ensured supply.
