More People Heard Concerts Than Watched Baseball In '62
UPI reports a cultural boom with 1,252 symphony orchestras in the United States and more people listening to concerts than attending all major and minor league baseball games in 1962. Books published rose by 3,000 year over year as little theaters multiply and Americans buy about $600 million in musical instruments and sheet music.

Concert spending overtakes sports in American culture
UPI reports Americans spend about 50 million yearly on concert tickets and 100 million on recorded concert music while 290 million goes to sports tickets. The piece traces cultural inferiority, noting figures from Mencken to Steinbeck and the postwar shift toward at‑home culture driven by radio, TV, and improved phonographs.
