Final Action Set On New Tax Bills In Legislature
The House planned third reading for bills to raise tobacco taxes and create a school aid equalization fund while also taking up a gasoline tax increase. A 1 cent gasoline hike would allocate 80 percent to cities for street work and 20 percent to counties. the plan aims to raise about $2 million annually for Phoenix. Man Who Saved Kids Identified
Norman Bennett of Phoenix has been named as the man who rescued 12 year old Jimmy Potts and 14 year old Peggy Potts from their burning Scottsdale home at 7507 East Minnewota. Bennett, a construction foreman and father of three, drove by and smashed the door with a potted plant ram, then carried Jimmy from beneath a bed and Peggy from a bathroom as firefighters arrived. The blaze, due to defective wiring, destroyed the $24,000 residence where Mrs. Jean Potts, a widow, was visiting.
