Scarsdale Woman's Club directors abandon the Ross site on Post road for a new clubhouse. They will decide October 19 between purchasing the Quincy house on Drake road or continuing a search for a suitable site.
A report by State Commissioners of Correction Leon C. Wainstock and John S. Kennedy on Scarsdale village lockup dated September 10, 1927, finds a barred room in village hall acceptable for one inmate of either sex with a matron in female cases and cot from Albany. currently all prisoners go to White Plains jail, though the village police force numbers 17 and population is 7,000.
At Monday night’s Board of Education meeting Dr. Ralph R. Ryan reported the infantile paralysis situation was quiet for now and advised parents to limit unnecessary trips into New York until the outbreak fully clears. He noted Scarsdale schools opened without a contagious disease case in the village.
Compromise amendments to Scarsdale building code require fire proofed cellar ceilings in old houses where oil burners are installed and align with Board of Fire Underwriters standards. The Village Board and Westchester Oil Burners Association representatives agreed at meetings, with a conference chaired by Trustee George Clifton and Fire Chief William Short to reassess regulations. Police Justice Charles M. Carter presided as suspended sentences totaled nine to seven against six violators last Thursday. The Board of Education decided to convert half day programs to full time at Greenacres, reducing part time classes from eight to four by turning the manual training and sewing rooms into classrooms. Edgewood plans to reconfigure a storeroom into a brighter classroom to cut part time classes from six to four, while petitions urged private housing to ease Greenacres’ schedule.
Winbrook school in White Plains begins its eighth year with a fifty percent rise in registration. Two new teachers join the staff Miss Ruth Robinson and Miss Judith Lee Dismukes. Robinson will lead groups III and IV for ages eight to ten and resume studies at Columbia University this winter. Dismukes, a Vassar and University of Vermont graduate, will teach French to the whole enrollment and has lived in France.
The Scarsdale Rotary Club held an Ask Me Another contest at their weekly meeting. Norman Gerhard organized a special quartet for musical entertainment. Members were invited to join the Highway Safety Club under the American Road Builders Association, pledging safe driving with no financial obligations. A late season golf match is set for October 6 at Leewood Golf Club between Scarsdale and Yonkers Rotary clubs.
Scarsdale Post of the American Legion will elect new officers for the coming year at 8 PM on Wednesday October 5 at the Fire House on Post and Popham roads. The meeting is open to all ex service men. A Paris Legion Convention veteran will speak and a war picture will be shown. A Armistice Day dance is planned at the Scarsdale Golf Club to raise funds for a Post building fund.
Scarsdale Supply Company hosted an open house to hear the Tunney versus Dempsey fight. More than forty radio-free attendees attended the store listening event.
Arthur Boniface village engineer departed Wednesday for Albany on business and will attend the State Engineers Congress in Binghamton this week.
A village board meeting Tuesday explored an airplane height ordinance. Village counsel William C. White was to study adopted ordinances from other communities and report back. Judge White noted Commerce Department rules largely cover local needs, with nuisance control as a basis. Officials will meet Drake Road Association to outline possible regulations for Wilmot road field flyovers.
Yale professor George Pierce Baker will address the first Parent-Teacher Association meeting at the High School auditorium on Monday evening October 10. The narrative highlights his long academic career at Harvard, Radcliffe founded “47 Workshop,” and his move to Yale in 1924 with new drama courses.
A Ford coupe owned by Westchester Title and Trust and driven by Charles F. Talbot of Tarrytown caught fire on Ardsley Road at two Tuesday afternoon. The Greenville Fire Company arrived to extinguish the blaze and the car interior was badly burned.
Relatives will receive the bulk of the estate of John T. Kelly of Cooper road. Kelly died at his Scarsdale home on Monday September 5. The will was filed on the prior Saturday and the estate is estimated at more than 1,000,000.
A resolution to authorize a $100,000 bond for village storm drains was approved after a roll call at the Tuesday night board meeting. Presently $60,000 will be issued and work begins as soon as funds are available.
James Baird, trustee since March 16 1926, resigned at the Scarsdale Village Board meeting. Mayor Warren Cunningham read the resignation accepted by motion. vacancy to be filled at the next meeting. Baird led highways sewers and water committee and heads the Fuller Construction Company prior to his current role. He is president of the James Baird Company and the Scarsdale Golf Club.
Greenacres Association discussed taxi service at Hartsdale station urging competition by granting concessions to two firms. A committee was formed to approach New York Central about parking and soliciting rights on railroad property to relieve current monopolistic service.
Cold weather last week triggered two still alarm calls for the fire department. Dr. Nelson P. Shields on Post road requested help turning off an overheated oil burner furnace. I M Marks residence at 63 Lee Avenue reported an overheated steam furnace. No fires occurred in these incidents. A broken gas main at Brewster and Harcourt roads was ignited by a steam roller, prompting patrols until Westchester Lighting could shut off the gas.
The Scarsdale Board of Education schedules a special meeting for October 24 to vote on starting construction of a Fox Meadow elementary school on land bought last spring. Enrollment at Greenacres Edgewood and the High School shows sharp year over year gains, signaling urgent need to add school capacity.

The Scarsdale Inquirer will move tomorrow to the second floor of the Scarsdale Supply Company building, where it has occupied ground floor offices since last April. Dr. Caroline Buttrick will return this fall to occupy the ground floor space, while the paper gains more floor area to accommodate growth.
