Scarsdale Public Library to hold its first Book Fair from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday October 2 on library grounds with over 2000 surplus books priced 10 cents to $1. Proceeds support new purchases. Rain date: Sunday October 3 from 10 to 5.
The Scarsdale Studio Workshop for Art is awarded 8500 by the New York State Council on the Arts for development and program costs. The non profit school, celebrating its 20th year, serves Westchester residents with classes for all ages and a range of community programs.
A benefit production of Fiddler on the Roof by the Youth Drama group of the Church of the Living Hope East Harlem will be staged Saturday in Scarsdale. The interracial cast is directed by Rev. George E. Calvert, with ICCY sponsorship to support local youth programs and scholarships. Tickets via Mrs Robt Calvert or Mrs Herbert M Parker.
Registration is offered September 30 to October 2 at local sites including Greenacres, Fox Meadow, and Scarsdale High along with other venues. To vote in November you must register by deadlines. absentee ballots available through October 26.
The Scarsdale Democratic Town Committee held its September 15 1971 organizational meeting electing officers for two years. Chairman Marylou Brown Vice chairman Wolfe Charney Secretary Linda Rosensweig Treasurer John Mooney Jr Assistant to the Chairman Suzanne Sheehy. A special committee with the Scarsdale Democratic Club was formed to plan activities for new voters and Betty Halperin serves as mailing coordinator for out of town voters.
Judge John M. Friedman, village justice for ten years, leads a public fall meeting of the Village Club on October 4 at 8 15 p m in Dyckman Hall. He is joined by Scarsdale Police Chief Theodore Tutero and other village officials to discuss the drug problem from law enforcement view with audience participation.
Scarsdale patrolman exchanged shots with a burglary suspect Sunday night during a report at Seymour Svirsky’s home 44 Penn Boulevard. The chase extended toward New Rochelle and Pinebrook Boulevard as officers from several law units aided search. no arrest made. Chief Gray cites increased burglaries and links to a Philadelphia group. alarms urged.
County Legislator Allen A. Richman backs a County Board resolution to allow year round registration by county city and town clerks and seeks to amend to permit village clerks as well. He cites broadened franchise access and plans to explore state election law to enable branch registrations if needed. Richman, seeking re election in the eighth district, ties reforms to strong democratic principles and past support for extending June 1972 primary registration.
Audrey Hochberg a Democrat for the County Legislature opposes the proposed waste disposal contract with the States Environmental Facilities Corporation arguing recycling should be the priority and criticizing potential financial risks for Westchester County if municipalities reduce waste. She notes the plan lacks recycling focus and could cost the county millions in principal interest and operating expenses with an open ended cost structure and upstate dumping.
The Scarsdale Board of Education and the P T Council welcome Dr Thomas Sobol new Superintendent of Schools with a reception in the High School Cafeteria on Sunday September 26 from 4 00 to 6 00 PM. Brewster Road entrance indicated. All Scarsdale residents invited.
