Literacy Tests For Voters During Registration Hours

Superintendent Archibald B. Shaw announced literacy tests will be held at Scarsdale High School Room 213 during registration hours from Oct 6 to 11. New state law allows pass by eighth grade diploma or affidavit, or honorable discharge from U.S. service. tests will be rare and only for certain naturalized citizens or non-English instruction graduates.

Edgemont Assembly Plans speech by Mrs Roosevelt

The Edgemont School PTA opens the year with a guest address from Mrs Franklin D Roosevelt on United Nations work, progress and challenges. She will speak to Junior High and fifth and sixth grades, with no parent invitations this year due to higher enrollment.

Pfc. Douglas BE Reeder Arrives in Germany with 28th Infantry

Pfc. Douglas BE Reeder, son of Mr and Mrs P G Reeder of Clarence Road, has recently arrived in Germany serving with the 28th Infantry Division under NATO guarding Western Europe. A Princeton University graduate, he previously worked as an assistant buyer at Bloomingdale's in New York City before entering the Army in February 1951.

Open House Day Aids Hammond House Restoration

The Westchester County Historical Society plans Open House Day on Saturday October 4 to benefit Hammond House and nine other 18th century homes in Scarsdale. Funds raised aim to finish interior restoration while exterior work proceeds under committee leadership. Police credited for breaking up Westchester burglary gang

District Attorney George M. Fanelli praised Scarsdale and White Plains police for netting a burglary gang accused of thefts totaling about a million dollars across Westchester Nassau and New York City. Jacob Wissenfeld, 42, labeled the gang’s ringleader, was arrested after a White Plains tip linked to Russell.

Friends Meeting House Sign Taken

The large grey colonial sign in front of the Friends Meeting House on Popham Rd was reported missing after the Sunday Meeting of Silent Worship. It had first vanished two weeks earlier when Gustave Sudaka repainted it, and builders say if returned no questions will be asked.

Hallowe'en Window Painting Contest Set for Oct 25

Scarsdale Chamber of Commerce and Scarsdale Recreation Dept announce the annual Hallowe'en Window Painting Contest to be held Saturday October 25 with about 1000 children expected. Black captains will seek permission to use store windows and merchants are urged to cooperate. Costs are typically covered by the Chamber, with non members asked to contribute ten dollars to defray expenses.

LaFleur Promoted to First Lieutenant in Korea

Scarsdale Voters May Register For Election Day

Time is short for Scarsdale voters to register before the October 6 to 11 period. People out of town can register at the Westchester County Board of Elections in White Plains from 9 to 4 weekdays and 9 to noon Saturdays until September 26. Absent ballot requests are available there or in Scarsdale on regular registration days.

The Scarsdale Adult School will set up a registration office at Scarsdale High School this Monday for fall term enrollment from October 7 to 10.
