A crowd of over 150 greeted the Scarsdale campaign kickoff at 18 Popham Road for the Scarsdale Citizens' Committee for Johnson Humphrey. Theodore Tannenwald Jr. urged electing the Johnson Humphrey team with Frank Conniff of New Rochelle and Robert F. Kennedy for state Senate. Speakers included Conniff and Joseph L. Hutner of White Plains. Village Trustee Robert E. Delany introduced. Officials urged an all-out voting drive with Millard Rothenberg noting Kennedy and Conniff support.
The Scarsdale Adult School will offer two fall courses to analyze current events and major foreign policy problems. Richard S. Winslow, a former U N official and Harvard graduate, will teach the Foreign Problems course with guest experts, while Dr and Mrs Bernard Bellush will lead Current Events.
Enrollment at Quaker Ridge School reaches 658, up 15 from June 1964, the largest in school history. District 2 board meeting heard details from James F. Gray, with 39 new district families contributing to growth.
Senator George W. Cornell, retiring from the New York State Senate List Senatorial District, will be guest of honor at the sixth annual Scarsdale Republican dinner held at the Hilton Inn near the Tappan Zee. Congressman Ogden Reid named 30 business, cultural and community leaders to two committees to map plans for a broad based Westchester Cultural Center. Scarsdale residents John W. Gardner Lawrence Valenstein and Hans J. Wolfisberg join the core group, with Hilda Reiter and James N. Rosenberg on the advisory body. Arthur Judson of Rye will advise both committees as a special consultant.
The Village Board moves toward creating an architectural board of review to maintain Scarsdale’s residential character. Two committees expect reports at next Tuesday’s meeting. Law committee chaired by Bernard D. Atwood may urge a public hearing. property use committee led by Jules L. Wacht will offer preliminary views. The effort stems from the Conference of Neighborhood Association Presidents and Mrs. David Rumsey Jr. chairing a subcommittee.
Scarsdale Village Board plans a public hearing next Tuesday on removing the paper street William Road from the official map. Also on the agenda is a Safety Council subcommittee report on school crossings and several routine items including communications, minutes, and resolutions.
The Union Free School District No 1 will conduct its annual census from October 1 to October 15. Householders will be asked to provide requested information for census enumerators who will carry Board of Education identification.
The board cites selecting a new superintendent, the high school building program, and consolidation with District II as key issues this year. Acting superintendent Dr. Paul Mitchell is the leading candidate, with a six to nine month timeline. New bids on renovations are expected as contractors submit lower bids. A citizen’s committee will report on consolidation in October, followed by hearings and voter consideration.
The League of Women Voters of Scarsdale schedules a general meeting for September 25 at the Scarsdale Woman's Club. A 1 p.m. lunch precedes a program panorama for 1964 65 with introductions to officers and board, and discussions of duties and plans. Members, friends and interested residents invited.
Bobby Kennedy is set to appear at Yonkers Raceway in a large Westchester fundraising affair. The event features a clambake, barbecue, and tickets from 5 to 15 dollars, with ample crowd expectations and strong support from Scarsdale organizer Mrs. William L. Riegelman.
